The villages mentioned in the document were bequeathed on June 22, 1457, by Yan Khodorovskyi of Berezdivtsi to the Lviv hospital (AGZ V, no. CLIII). Luchany is a village in the Bibrka county, which still bears the same name today. The other two have changed their names. The village named Nalturzany alias Piotrowa Hora in the above document was called Mohylyshche in 1457, and today it is called Nahorynie and is also located in the Bibrka county. The third locality, named Bolszoic in the above document and in 1457, is today's town of Bilshivtsi. (Compare Rasp, *Beschreibung der Stiftungen des Bürgerspitals St. Lazar* [Description of the Foundations of the Citizens' Hospital of St. Lazarus], pp. 7 and 8). Let us take a closer look at this exchange to determine whether the Lviv councilors made a favorable or unfavorable deal for the hospital. They exchanged three villages for one. Luchany now has (i.e., according to the 1870 census) 237 inhabitants and has an area of arable land in Lower Austrian morgs of 220 of larger property, 299 of smaller property; meadows and gardens 295 of larger property, 45 of smaller property; pastures 8 of larger property, 23 of smaller property. Nahorynie, according to the 1870 census, has 167 inhabitants, and the area of the village according to Rasp is 234 morgs (I do not possess more precise data, because the list of lands for this village was omitted in Orzhekhovskyi's index). Bilshivtsi is today a town with a population of 2362 inhabitants, arable land 752 morgs of larger property, 942 morgs of smaller property; meadows and gardens 560 morgs of larger property, 260 morgs of smaller property; pastures 35 morgs of larger property, 72 morgs of smaller property; forests 30 morgs of larger property. — Malekhiv has 507 inhabitants, arable land 169 morgs of larger property, 479 morgs of smaller property; meadows and gardens 74 morgs of larger property, 227 morgs of smaller property; pastures 6 morgs of larger property, 65 morgs of smaller property; forests 54 morgs of larger property. If someone were to make such an exchange today, exchanging three localities with 2766 inhabitants and 3775 morgs of land for a village with 507 inhabitants and 1074 morgs of land, they would make a deal beneath all criticism. Of course, we cannot judge this matter entirely from this standpoint, because in 1489 these relations must have appeared quite differently: Bilshivtsi was not yet a town then but a village, and the advantage of the proximity of Malekhiv, located very close to Lviv, certainly meant even more then than today. In any case, however, we can say that the Lviv councilors made an unfavorable deal for the hospital here.
