Belgorodka and the coil found in it.

(Cher.-E'.kaiya m?:ai).

Reading I.P. Khrushchi.

19 versts from Kyiv in a spicy direction to the west, five versts from the Kyiv-Zhtomir highway, is the town of Belgorodka, located on the right, very steep in this place, bank of the Irpen River, which flows into the Dnipro slightly above the suburb of Kurenevka.

Karamzin also pointed out in Belgorodka the ancient Vladimir Belgorod, although he erroneously named Irpsn, “Ruppnyo* (East. State. Ross. I, 134, etc. 468). The beloved city of St. Vladimir played a prominent role for two whole centuries. The episcopal table was established in Belgorod simultaneously with the introduction in Russia Christianity. The chronicle of the 11th century preserved the names of Belgorod bishops in the description of Kyiv church celebrations. Ten such names are still remembered at the proskomedia of every liturgy in the poor Belgorod church. In the 12th century, Belgorod was given to the prince destined for the great reign of Kyiv. Kyiv often depended on the “strong” Belgorod, as Karamzin calls it. For this reason, Belgorod withstood quite a few sieges during the era of internecine wars for the golden table of Kyiv. Grand Duke Rurik Rostnslavich especially loved Belgorod: he planted his eldest son Rostislav there and built a stone church in the name of St. apostles Peter and Paul. He installed his confessor, Abbot Adrian of Vydubetsky, as bishop of Belgorod. 11with this

The Grand Duke took place in Belgorod the marriage of his son, Rostislav, with the noble bride of the north, Verkhuslava, daughter of Vsevolod the Big Nest. Bishop Maxim with the Sofia priests married Rostislav in the church of St. apostles,

Nowadays in Belgorodka there is only one Church of the Resurrection, a wooden one of recent construction. However, the memory of other churches that once existed in Belgorod is still preserved by local residents. Thus, one deserted hill is called St. Hump. Nicholas, and in the place where the ancient church of St. The apostles go annually to bless the willow tree, despite the long distance from the existing church.

On the Kyiv side, Belgorodka is surrounded by ramparts. Earthen gates and ditches have been preserved with all the clarity of the plan of ancient fortifications. Near the present church there is an internal rampart with a very deep ditch, which in ancient times surrounded the prince’s courtyard on the southern and eastern sides. Under a thin layer of earth overgrown with grass, one can see the regular masonry of the oak frame that strengthened the embankment.

In many places in Belgorodka, tiles of white Mezhigorsk clay and red native clay are found. There are tiles with patterns of the ancient style, and sometimes covered with tile glaze with a pattern. To the west of the church, as to the west of the entire Belgorodka, there are no ramparts or ditches. Along the steep bank of the Irpen there was certainly a city stone wall, and it was this wall that was famous for its fortress.

Now on the outskirts of the mountain? towering over Irpen, there are vegetable gardens - and in one of them, on June 11 of this year, an excellently preserved gold medal with an eye, similar to the so-called Chernihiv medal, was found. Under the place where the medal was found, at a depth of one and a half arshins, many fragments and whole pieces of brick were found, obvious remains of the city wall. Among them there were also patterned tiles; quite a few human bones and coal.

The medal found has on the front side an image of the Most Holy Theotokos with a baby on her right hand. Around the image there is a Greek inscription carved inside, similar

(albeit much shorter) with a Greek, incomprehensible inscription, the so-called Chernihiv medal:

USI€РЛМЭЛЛНМ€КНОСОЭН€ННН€КеОСЛ€СНЗРИХА-i- Around the first inscription there is another, also Greek, consisting partly of understandable prayer appeals and partly of corrupted and inconveniently understandable words: FKberOIRNFILDTTE (OPOPF&ZhTI €&Y№OLNNNN Na On the reverse side there is an image of a head in a helmet, surrounded by a 12-headed snake, much more clearly stamped than on the front side. Around it there is an inscription, like on the Chernigov medal, with a small difference: DGIOSgkGIOSLGIOSKIUSLVLOFOPNLRNSHRL NOH -+- The weight of the medal is 14 spools 87 shares. is visible in the attached figure II. - Figure III and IV show the patterns of tiles found at the place where the medal was found.
