a person living in a purely Christian environment, that is, in a monastery, such as Pechersky was. He accepts God's war as a test rather than as a threat. To the impression made on the monk by the plunder of the monastery by the Polovtsians, we owe a whole discussion about their origin. The Author reinforces this book wisdom with information about another mysterious people, riveted in the mountains by Alexander the Great, the people of Ugra, who, he heard from Novgorodian Gyuryata Rogovich, exchange animal skins for iron for Novgorodians. But, having interrupted his story with such a legend about the Ponovtsy, the chronicler returns to the events of the year, which he vigilantly follows in the cell of the Pechersk monastery; Judas, an eyewitness-pagan, brought him from nearby Pereyaslav a detailed story about the murder of Itlar.

The next year is devoted to the struggle of Oleg Svyatoslavich, first with one, then with another son of Monomakh. Details, such as the banner of Monomakh, which Mstislav gave to the infantry under the command of the Polovtsian Kunuy, and the very movement of troops in the battle could hardly be recorded in the monastery. But the compiler of the story used the legend about the struggle of Oleg Svyatoslavich with the sons of Monomakh and thus ended the year 6604.

The next year was memorable for the establishment of peace in Lyubech and the blinding of Vasilko.

A brief chronicle report has been preserved about the first event, true, accurate, living, written not in Lyubech, not on the spot, but in Kyiv, where the chronicle was kept. “And Svyatopolv came with Davyd to Kyiv, and for the sake of all the people, but only the devil was sad about this love, and Satan climbed into the heart of some man and began to speak to Davydov Igorevich, saying: as Bolodimer formed an alliance with Vasilko against Svyatopolv and against you.”... Here we begin. there is a detailed story about the fate of Prince Vasilko •). First we

') Professor Bestuzhev-Ryumin (On the composition of Russian chronicles until the end of the 14th century, p. 48) calls this monument the legend of the blindness of Vasilko. Academician Ireznevsky calls it the chronicle legends of Vasily, but then he seems to be drawn to the idea that this is not a legend. and the legend about Vasilko’s blindness and the events that followed (Ancient memory, Russian writing and language, p. 20). To call it say-

Vasily's knowledge of Vasily's legacy is difficult, because it is not limited to this one event. Meanwhile, there is no reason to SEPARATE the story of Vasily's death from the story of further Events, where Vasily's own author is.
