Arsenal have been made aware of interest in Lucas Torreira from a suitor who has made significant progress on one side of the deal, according to reports.
Torreira has been an Arsenal player for four years now, but has spent half that time on loan. During the 2020-21 campaign, he won La Liga as a secondary player with Atletico Madrid. Then, in 2021-22, he put his own individual career back on track in a productive season with Fiorentina.
Over the summer, Torreira returned to Arsenal, who signed him for another season. However, it doesn’t seem too likely that he will spend it with them.
Indeed, there have been several exit links for the Uruguay international. A return to Serie A has been speculated, although Fiorentina failed to reach an agreement to keep him permanently.
There have been suggestions of Roma interest from Jose Mourinhoas well as the club Arsenal bought Torreira from in the first place, Sampdoria.
However, the Italian source Calciomercato.it now paint a pessimistic view of Torreira’s chances of being back in their country’s top flight in 2022-23. In place, the website claims Galatasaray wants to take him to Turkey.
In fact, the Super Lig side have made this known to Arsenal. Torreira is not part of Mikel Arteta’s plans so the Gunners will be ready to arrange a deal.
From the player’s point of view, there would already be an agreement in principle between Torreira’s entourage and Galatasaray. He would sign a three-year contract with an option for another 12 months.
Contract details revealed
The contract is said to be worth a net sum of over €3m per season, which would equate to around £50,000 a week. It would be a slight decrease on the £75,000 a week he would have from Arsenal.
But the most important thing for Torreira will be to settle in a club where he is wanted. At 26, he deserves to play a fundamental role for whoever he represents.
The years of his provisional contract at Galatasaray should be part of the peak of his career. Although he might not have considered spending them outside of one of Europe’s top five leagues, he would still join a club with a big pedigree.
However, the Istanbul-based outfit have their work cut out for them to return to their usual level. They finished 13th out of 20 teams in the 2021-22 Super Lig, so they have no variety of UEFA competitions to involve in the next term.
They have already strengthened their midfield with the arrival of Sergio Oliveira from Porto, who won a European medal while on loan at Roma last season. It followed their release of several players into similar territory.
Therefore, Torreira still has room to add to his options and amass a significant chunk of playing time.
Arsenal didn’t get the best out of Lucas Torreira
Given the short time left on his contract, any exit from the Emirates Stadium for Lucas Torreira this summer will be final.
Looking back on his time with the club, it’s fair to say that things didn’t quite go to plan. Torreira looked like a top talent in his Sampdoria days.
He then played regularly during his first two seasons with Arsenal. What happened next, only they know.
Maybe he just wasn’t an Arteta player. But there certainly could have been a better use for South America.
Now he’s about to embark on a new adventure elsewhere, it seems. Arsenal will manage without him in their midfield, as they have already done for two seasons.
But maybe he could have had a bigger impact with the right amount of faith. The fact that he will go a second consecutive season without European football if he joins Galatasaray, however, suggests that Arsenal could be slightly ahead of where they are as a player now.
It could have been different, however.
